In 1993 the Palmetto Project created a network of volunteer health care providers, pharmacists, pharmaceutical companies, and hospitals to provide free and volunteer medical services to insure that every South Carolinian had access to basic medical care. Today that program, known as Commun-I-Care, serves thousands of our state’s working poor who can access the program by simply dialing a toll-free number. In 1998 Commun-I-Care was established as separate non-profit organization with its own board and staff. A major national foundation last year announced plans to fund programs around the country which are based on our model.
