A shot of an office building shaded in navy and with white text saying about us.

Over four decades ago, visionary leaders in the Palmetto State recognized that innovation was the key to advancing health, education, and economic outcomes in South Carolina.

They believed in the power of new ideas to fulfill the promise of our home.

Since our founding in 1984, the Palmetto Project team has worked alongside civic leaders, educators, businesses, government agencies — and our fellow neighbors and South Carolinians  like you! — to expand access to healthcare, improve early literacy, and strengthen our communities.

Our current core programming is focused on building healthy communities and thriving families.

  • We increase access to healthcare through the only nonprofit health insurance brokerage and social enterprise in South Carolina, called Insure SC.
  • We deliver a monthly book  to 13,000 children under five years-old in six counties in partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
  • We support students in need and experiencing homelessness during the summer and at the holidays, as well as Midlands  students in need, families, adults with disabilities, and senior citizens living below the poverty line through our Families Helping Families programs in the Midlands and Lowcountry.
  • We are breaking cycles of community violence and training mentors for youth involved with the justice system to reduce recidivism through our program The Redirect Collective.

As we look ahead to the next 40+ years, our commitment to our foundation remains steadfast. We are building on what works,  growing what is possible, and launching new initiatives to help families and communities thrive. We will continue to improve the lives and increase opportunity for every South Carolinian.

Because we are what makes the Palmetto State special. Our people are what take ideas from imagination to impact.

Palmetto Project operates our programs across South Carolina. Our headquarters are in North Charleston, and we have a satellite office in Columbia. We also have remote staff in the Upstate and Pee Dee Regions.
