Kids with Cameras

Adult Mentors Open Up a New World to Urban Children

Charleston Kids with Cameras is an ongoing mentorship program organized by the professional photographers of the Lowcountry to help inner-city children explore their world in unique and imaginative ways. The photographers serve as the mentors, teaching the children how to use their imagination in taking and editing photographs, and then preparing them for exhibition.

The children’s work is featured annually around the state, including several appearances at the annual Spoleto Arts Festival in Charleston. It has also traveled with the highly-acclaimed international Kids with Cameras project.

The project has been funded with local dollars, including grants from Palmetto Project supporters, John Davis and John Winthrop. It was founded by Charleston photographer, Gene Furchgott.
