			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The South Carolina Clinical &amp; Translation Research Center for Community Health Partnerships (SCTR/CCHP) has announced three teams to be selected for the 2012-2013 Community Engaged Scholars Program. The 18-month program provides training and pilot funds for community and academic partners to conduct community-based participatory research (CBPR).  The goal of this program is to increase the capacity of community-academic partnerships to conduct research with mutual ownership of the processes and products.</p>
<p>Three teams have been selected to participate.  These teams represent academic disciplines from across MUSC and partners from various community sectors.  The teams that have been selected to participate are:</p>
<p>Community Partner: <strong>Carrie Whipper, Palmetto Project </strong><br />
Academic Partner: Carolyn Jenkins, College of Nursing, MUSC<br />
Project Title: <em>An Integrated Approach to Diabetes Management and Associated Complications at Low Country Food Bank Sites</em></p>
<p>Community Partner: Akeem Bell, Lowcountry Alliance for Model Communities (LAMC)/ Environmental Community Advisory Board Academic Partner: Kristen French, Department of Medicine, MUSC<br />
Project Title: <em>Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in the Neck area of Charleston County: investigation of health disparities related to environmental exposures</em></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">South Carolina ranked 9<sup>th</sup> among the states in reducing the percentage of its children without health insurance from 2008 through 2010, according to a new Federal study.    </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Neighboring North Carolina ranked 15<sup>th</sup> while Georgia came in at 25<sup>th</sup>. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">This is a testament to the Palmetto Project’s many volunteer teams and staff.   During this period, our Palmetto Children’s Health initiative (PCHI) oversaw a $1 million statewide initiative to provide insurance outreach and education, Medicaid enrollment assistance, and advocacy for families of the state’s 125,000 &#8211; now 100,000 &#8211; uninsured children.</span></p>
